Help & Information

What is Night Weather Score?

Night Weather Score is a specialized tool designed to help astronomers, stargazers, and anyone interested in night sky observation. It analyzes historical weather data to provide insights into the quality of night sky viewing conditions for any location worldwide.

The application calculates an "AstroScore" based on cloud cover data, categorizing nights into clear, partially clear, and cloudy conditions. This helps you understand the best times for astronomical observations and plan your stargazing activities more effectively.

How to Use the Application

Step 1: Navigate to a Location

Use the search bar in the top-left corner of the map to find your desired location, or simply click anywhere on the map to select a point.

Step 2: View Weather Data

Once you select a location, the weather overlay will appear showing detailed information about night sky conditions for that area.

Step 3: Analyze the Results

Review the breakdown of clear, partially clear, and cloudy nights, along with the overall AstroScore for the selected location and time period.

Step 4: Customize Thresholds (Optional)

Adjust the clear sky and cloudy sky thresholds to match your specific viewing requirements. Lower thresholds mean stricter criteria for clear nights.

Step 5: Share Results

Use the "Share Location" button to copy a link to your current view, making it easy to share your findings with others.

Understanding the Scores

AstroScore

The AstroScore is a comprehensive rating from 0-100 that indicates the overall quality of night sky viewing conditions. Higher scores indicate better conditions for astronomical observations.
